This is the first book to lead emerging designers to the salaries they deserve, and author Ted Leonhardt is the first person to dedicate his career to addressing the challenges creative people face.

“Nail It” is a pocket guide that uses real-world stories to demystify the negotiation process. Does negotiating intimidate you? Have you left a meeting with the vague feeling that you caved in too soon? Ted Leonhardt posits that feeling gun-shy and giving in too soon are common in the creative community, and that such costly missteps can be avoided. “Nail It” was inspired by conversations the author had with the 2013 BFA design graduates of the University of Washington, which in turn led to conversations with his friends, clients, and colleagues on their experiences entering the business. Undeniable patterns came to light, ones creative people encounter and struggle with time and again.

Using his own appealing illustrations and a light touch, the author identifies principles and strategies to help designers of every stripe earn more money. In “Nail It” you’ll learn how to

•Beat back feelings of intimidation when negotiating
•Jumpstart a stalled interview
•Maintain your integrity at every stage of a job search
•Always behave like an expert
•Attract the interviews you want
•Never leave money on the table that should be yours!

Nail It Stories for Designers on Negotiating with Confidence eBook Ted Leonhardt Allison Laurel Reviews

“Nail it” is useful to both those starting out in their careers and those who have been at it for quite a while. Ted Leonhardt shares what others won’t – insights and life lessons to negotiate with confidence that not only gets you what you deserve, but puts you in a position of respect and authority on day-one of your new job, contract, or project. His stories draw from what he has done and from what he has observed in other designers, and are relayed in a way that is memorable and applicable. Ted inspires you to do what you love with confidence and go create your own stories of experiences and learnings.

I’ve known Ted for many years, and have watched him build one of the most successful graphic design businesses in the Pacific Northwest. His success derived, in part, from his talent as a designer, but in larger measure from his grasp of the business of design. This book is a distillation of the wisdom he’s accumulated over all those years. It’s a must-read for graphic designers, with plenty of wisdom for job seekers of all types, and for others engaged in the professional services who find themselves regularly negotiating contracts. Ted’s honesty and humility are refreshing, and his writing is easy to read and digest, with lots of stories that anyone can relate to.
I read your book after driving 1600 miles to get back home , and though exhausted, couldn't put it down. Because you are a friend , It was more like listening to you talk than reading a book . I liked it a lot; the balance of empathy, and business sense ( I doubt if anyone left your office feeling unworthy), the stories and how you "hammered home" the basic points but in different scenarios . I can easily relate this to real estate negotiations, so usefu to me as well.
Excellent read and a bargain. This book is recommended for designers but, in my opinion and experience, it has useful information for all professionals, from entry-level to experienced business owners. Ted is objective and fun as he illustrates how to act and react during a series of stressful situations everyone encounters in the professional world, such as interviewing or bidding/negotiating for projects. This book gives quick and valuable information that can make a difference and help professionals nail important negotiations. I wish Ted wrote this book when I first started out!
The title of this book couldn't be better. The author nails the topic in clear, direct language with stories that illustrate his points. Traditionally most people in professional practices graduated with no business training whatsoever. So when they find themselves in their own consulting practices or building a firm as Leonhardt did, they need to learn the fundamentals. Most learn gradually from experience, which can be a long, arduous and costly road. Others, like Leonhardt, sought out formal training from top experts. "Nail It" provides many of the valuable insights he gained, and they will help anyone running a business of any kind. Buy it and read it again and again! It will save you from making a lot of mistakes and earn you more than you might imagine.
I first heard Ted Leonhardt speak at an AIGA panel discussion in San Francisco a few years back. The topic of the discussion was new business development strategies for designers. The first two speakers, both account managers for design firms, ran through a predictable list of tactics which included attending networking events and the necessity of cold-calling prospects.

When it came Ted's turn to speak, he addressed the room full of fresh-faced and stylishly dressed designers by saying "Congratulations, you all work in a commoditized industry! What are you doing to stand apart?" In unison, nearly everyone's mouth fell open in stunned disbelief. With over a decade of experience as an independent designer, I understood the frustration of clients not understanding the value I create for them. Ted's first statement so perfectly crystallized my situation at the time, I hired him as my business coach immediately after the meeting.

Since working with Ted, I have begun to command significantly higher fees for my work and enjoy a much greater level of respect for the expertise I provide to my clients. The effectiveness of Ted's approach is his understanding of how the magic of design intersects with the logic business to create value. Thus, Ted's mission is a simple one to make sure designers are fairly compensated for this value they create.

I was excited to hear Ted was writing a book for new designers entering the field and how they could negotiate the best beginning salaries and fees possible. "Nail It" uses anecdotes from Ted's actual clients to illustrate successful negotiations and potential pitfalls to consider. To my knowledge, no other book exists on this subject. I only wish I had a book like "Nail It" when I first entered the design profession. It should be required reading for every design program.
Great book with a lot of tips. Its primarlity aimed at someone who is younger who is new to the industry, but someone who has been around a while will get some nuggets from it.

If you like Ted's book, I **HIGHLY** recommend you check out his video course on negotiation on CreativeLive. So much wisdom he gives to the creative people. He has helped me immensely in my negotiation process. I negotiated a job successfully in the tens of thousands of dollars with Ted's wisdom. Thanks Ted!
